c.1620 - 1701 Jacques (or Jacob) Bourgeois was born in France and qualified as a surgeon before emigrating in 1642 to Port Royal where his father (also named Jacques) was an army officer. He married Jeanne Trahan and they had ten children from whom many Acadian "Bourgeois" are descended. In 1672, along with two of his sons and two sons-in-law Jacques founded the Acadian settlement of Beaubassin. There he became a farmer and merchant, and having learned English also became an interpreter in dealing with the New Englanders. Some time before 1699 he returned to Port Royal where he died in 1701. |
