GRACE ANNIE LOCKHART
(1855-1916)

Grace Annie Lockhart was the first woman to earn a university degree in the British Empire. Founded exclusively for the education of men, universities in the 19th century gradually began to open their doors to women. Mount Allison College became co-educational in 1872. This change built on the pioneering commitment to female education of the associated Mount Allison Ladies’ Academy and of denominational schools in the United States. Lockhart, a student at the Ladies Academy, took courses at the college, formally enrolled in 1874 and graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science and English Literature on 25th May, 1875.Grace Annie Lockhart fut la première femme de l’Empire britannique à recevoir un diplôme universitaire.
