Mount Allison University
MOUNT ALLISON UNIVERSITY
1839
The university is named after Charles Frederick Allison, a Sackville merchant and convert to Methodism who in 1839 offered land and funds for the creation of an academy for boys. In 1854 a “ladies academy” (later known as the Ladies College) was added, while in 1862 a degree-granting Mount Allison Wesleyan College was created. The present “Mount A” evolved from these institutions though by 1953 the boys and ladies academies had closed and a liberal arts undergraduate university emerged as enrollment increased to the present 2500 students. Mount Allison has been ranked the #1 undergraduate university in Canada by Macleanís magazine for 18 of the past 24 years.

Erected by the Town of Sackville to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Mount Allison University by CHARLES FREDERICK ALLISON, merchant, philanthropist, churchman and citizen of the town. In recognition of a long and harmonious relationship, May 6, 1989.
