WEST APARTMENT HOUSE
1906 – 1908This three-storey apartment building was constructed for Ellen L. Read who acquired the property from Albert E. Wry in May 1906. Although the foundation was laid in 1906 construction was not completed until 1908. Miss Read reserved the second floor apartment for herself. When Miss Read died unexpectedly in 1912 the property was inherited by her sisiter Lavinia Bates. Thereafter it remained in the Bates family for over 80 years. Lavinia’s daughter Marjorie married Frank West and they lived in the building; hence the generally accepted local designation “The West Apartment House.”
Following a fire which damaged the upper level the building was sold to new owners in the fall of 2011. After considerable negotiations with the Heritage Board permission was granted for a rebuilding and reconstruction of the third floor, along with some changes to the facade. New windows and doors were installed, and a new roof was constructed. The Palladian window on the third floor was retained. |
This building is within the Town of Sackville Municipal Heritage Conservation Area A. |
