Designed by the architectural firm of Brown, Brisley & Brown, and officially opened on 3 October 1966, the building houses Mount Allison's Department of Music. Though faced with the typical Mount A red sandstone the building with its three-winged layout and sweeping curved walls is strikingly different from the other structures on campus.

The facility houses studios and offices, practice rooms, ensemble rehearsal rooms, a computer lab, classrooms, and separate choral and instrumental music collections. It is also home to the 314-seat Brunton Auditorium performance hall. The Alfred Whitehead Memorial Music Library holds thousands of books, recordings, videos, scores, and periodicals, as well as listening, video-viewing, and study areas.

The building is named for Marjorie Young Bell, wife of Mount Allison's first Chancellor Ralph Pickard Bell, and like him a very generous benefactor of the University. A bronze bust of her stands in the foyer of the building.
