Captain Stephen B. Atkinson wrote this memoir for his daughter in 1904. It covers 50 years of his sailing career, serving on over 50 vessels, sailing and steaming on dozens of voyages all around the world, from locally built schooners to clipper ships to the Vanderbilt’s yacht. These pages are filled with his career, his many adventures, often with his family by his side, and with commentary on the people and world events of his day. Stephen’s handwriting has been transcribed, lightly edited, organized into chapters, and accompanied with ship portraits and photographs, maps, and informative appendices.
