Silas W. Copp House
1 Squire Street, Sackville, N.B.
SILAS W. COPP HOUSE
1890-91
Businessman Silas W. Copp moved from Baie Verte to Sackville in the early 1880s. In 1890 he purchased this lot at the corner of Bridge and Squire Streets in order to build a residence for himself. Construction began in October 1890 and was completed by April 1891.The house is in what has been termed “the Late Victorian Plain Style” of architecture. It has an unusually steep pitched roof, and the gable end which faces on to Squire Street is the main façade.

After Copp’s death Herbert and Gertrude Hicks lived here from 1927 to 1976. In 1985 the property was acquired by David Hawkins to house his Hawk Communications business. A major L-shaped two storey addition was constructed at the east end of the house in 1990 and care was taken to ensure that the addition blended with the style and architecture of the original.

Since 1997 the house and addition have provided the home and office of lawyer Ove Samuelsen. The heritage character of the buildings has been carefully preserved.

This building is within the Town of Sackville Municipal Heritage Conservation Area A.
